Since today is Throwback Thursday (#TBT), I thought we could throw it alllll the way back to yesterday, hump day, and share some delightful distractions from around the web. Enjoy!!

* How to do LA with little kiddos (and make sure everyone has a good time!)
* Holy cow, these images (based on models) of animals in the womb are AMAZING!
* From Blair Waldorf and Carrie Bradshaw to Chandler Bing and Jerry Seinfeld, ever wonder how much your favorite Manhattan apartment from tv would really cost to live inf?
* This is 30 (via exPress-o)
* I think it's gonna be this blunt cut with this "tortoise/ecaille" color for summer. Thoughts?
* Viva la smart ass!

Hump Day Distractions

This is terrible. Also, outstanding.
Well, we had a few glorious teaser days of spring weather for a hot second, but now temps have dipped again and the skies are gloomy. I'm not complaining though. I promise I won't complain as long as the puffer jacket doesn't have to come back out! Here to get us over the hump (and hopefully on to sunnier skies and warmer days) are some goodies from around the web. Enjoy!

* A flirty hairdo perfect for spring (and easy enough to try at home!)
* How those always chic Frenchies decide between flats and high heels.
* Dreaming non-passover, pasta-filled, dreams. Mmmm...
* Amy Winehouse, a musical goddess gone far too soon. Apparently there's going to be a documentary about it.
* I'm thinking I need a spiralizer and this one is the Amazon BestSeller. Any other suggestions!?
* Oh hello Mara Hoffman! I'll take one of everything please :)
* These will never stop being awesome (I want one so bad!)

Get me OUT OF HERE!

This kid is a genius.
Today I have that mild headachy-burn-behind-the-eyes feeling because I've been working into the wee hours and last night also doing laundry (12:30am in the basement laundry room, totally normal) in advance of the insanely anticipated vacation I'm going on tomorrow (#JamaicanMe30 woop woooop!) I'm not complaining, because hello VACATION, but the "do it all now so vacation can be vacation" workload combined with my building excitement is making any level of focus today... interesting. And when focus is coming and going I thank the holy heavens for Pinterest. Here for your reading pleasure are some freshly mined gems from site that just keeps on giving (distractions... and procrastination... and mind numbing entertainment). Enjoy!

I'm not usually one for whites and pale pinks, but this bouquet is just stunning.

Well don't YOU just look like an out-of-this-world salty and sweet treat!?

If it could be done for just 24 hours, I'd totally do it.

Beautiful to look at and no doubt delightful to eat!

I never thought about it that way...

I desperately want to slide on this slide.

Hump Day Distractions

Shut up with this ridiculously random adorableness.
And then the never ending week reached Hump Day and Merry Meri declared, "hark! I can see the weekend in the distance! onward ho!!" For reals. Let's get on with it shall we!?

* A bit of inspiration for us all from one man's near death experience on an airplane.
* I cannot tell you how much self control it has taken not to buy THIS. (I'd be all "yel-low!? Banana Phone here!")
* This mom tackles the tough topic of explaining sex for pleasure (as opposed to just procreation) to her young son. It's an interesting read.
* Get your Gatsby hair on.
* A veggie/mexican skillet for dinner tonight anyone!?
* I want to go to there.
* Everything you need to know about for this summer in NYC.
* It's your journey. Own it.
* Never knew how so many of these foods grew (via exPress-o)
* Sure to make you smile, meet Biddy the Hedgehog (he's obvi my new fav Insta friend)

Finally, I made a super awesome sandwich for lunch yesterday and I was so pumped about its tastiness that I'm going to a) eat it again today and b) share it with you:
- 1 Toufayan Low Carb Pita (only 3 WW points and it's BIG!)
- Boar's Head Low Sodium Turkey Breast
- Thinly Sliced Granny Smith Apple
- Robert Rothschild Wasabi Ginger Sauce (gives it a nice little kick, awesome compliment to the apple!)
I whipped this bad boy up in 2 minutes in my office kitchen and was so happy with the result that I was literally announcing to my cubicle mates that my homemade sandwich was "f*cking awesome" (ya gotta take the cheap thrills when you can get em, AmIRight!?)

On my mind (and in my ears)...

YAY indeed!
It's Fri-yay!! This morning, after Wednesday weather that was reminiscent of a mid-winter monsoon and a Thursday that couldn't seem to make up it's mind, I basked in the glory of a perfect spring stroll to the subway and the fact that a glorious weekend is mere hours away. Here to take you into the weekend is a bit of what's been on my mind (and in my ears!) lately. Have a good one!

Purple reign!?
Been thinking about my hair again and maybe, just maybe, going back to the wild side. Since as I've shared before (here, here) it takes months for me to commit and dye-ve in (hehe), what are your thoughts on the purple/lavender trend? Not for my whole head of course, but maybe a few underside streaks for summer!?

Nutrition Fact.

j'adore
I'm thinking there will need to be gold polka dots in my next apartment. Yes definitely... gold polka dots... (Check out the dots and other amazing wall decals and removable wallpaper patterns from WallsNeedLove)

It sometimes is all Black & White.
What's that you say Dr. H? You want to throw me a "Black and White Ball" a la Truman Capote for my 30th Birthday!? (Someone tell him, he doesn't read the blog!!)

If you love lady rap, then you must check out the debut album from Iggy AzaleaThe New Classic. Funky fresh hip hop and ridiculous beats (without the rage of Minaj or Lil Kim), Iggy will no doubt be in my ears all weekend.

Burned (a somewhat funny story)

Pucker up fishy!
This morning, as I was hustling to style my hair with my beloved curling wand, I waived that magic wand across my neck in a most un-magical way. "Ahhh!" the dreaded hair hot tool burn. Though not uncommon for me to occasionally suffer a finger or hand wound, this was the first for my neck and it hurt pretty bad, but I bravely soldiered on to ensure a timely morning departure. When I'd finished hair and moved on to makeup, I finally paused to take a look in the mirror at what exactly I had done and was horrified to discover a small redish/purple mark on the frontish/side of my neck. The mark itself wasn't horrifying, but its strong resemblance to another type of redish/purple mark that one gets on the frontish/side of her neck was.

As I assessed the damage and applied concealer, I hoped that the small size of the mark would thwart anyone from making naughty assumptions or at least make them wonder what sort of tiny, fish-mouthed man I'd shared my steamy make out sesh with. I then pulled my hair forward around my neck and like a sheepish teenage girl, headed out to face the day.

Hump Day Distractions

Witty
Helllllllo hump day! This week has been a beast of the best possible variety (late dinners out, sporting events galore, snow, snow and a little more snow:) but even the best beasts must be conquered so I'm looking forward to getting over the hump! Enjoy these delightful distractions and I will see you on the other side.

* These polar bear pics are just absolutely stunning. (via exPress-O)
* Everything you never knew you didn't know about Titantic (never let go!)
* If you live in San Fran, THIS is not to be missed.

New Year, New 'do.

Smooches and sexy waves. Bam!
Hey there my fellow 2014'ers! I hope that you all had a wonderful time ringing in the new year and relaxing yesterday!! I personally learned that there's no hangover that a healthy dose of dim sum can't fix, and that the ABC hit Scandal really does get even better in season 3 (no spoilers please! Dr. H and I have binge-watched the entire first 2 seasons in roughly 10 days and have the ambitious goal of being up to date when it returns later this month! Olivia.Pope.O.M.G.) Anywaysssssss, this morning I had a crazy spring in my step when I left the house, not because of the impending snowstorm (which I've fully convinced myself is going to cause work to be cancelled tomorrow), but because of THIS:

Ever since I chopped my hair to shoulder length in the fall, I've tried every possible way to get the "loose beachy curls" look without paying for a blowout. Sleeping in a bun, twisting the hair and curling irons have all led to frustration and disaster, but yesterday a lady love (chatting over our dim sum dumpling extravaganza) shared that her gorgeous loose curls were courtesy of  $25 extremely well spent on Conair's Curling Wand!!

The super simple to use tool seems specially designed for the curling iron impaired such as myself. This morning in about 10 minutes I took my frizzy, air dried hair and turned it into a beachy, well styled head of loose waves/curls by simply wrapping small sections around the wand in the away-from-your-face direction. For a first attempt at using the tool (and rushed as I always am in the morning) I could not believe how well my hair came out. Fo sho the best self-styling I've done since my most recent haircut/color in December. So if you're looking for a fun and cheap (no need to go with a pricier brand!) way to sass up your daily 'do, I cannot recommend the Conair Curling Wand highly enough. Happy styliing ladies :) (To purchase, click HERE, HERE or HERE!!)

Hump Day Distractions

Nailed it.
This is one of those Wednesdays that had me waking up in disbelief... "It can't possibly be only Wednesday... it's got to be at least Thursday by now!" Do you feel me? Alas, Wednesday is the best we can do so here are a few distractions from around the web to get us through the day and safely to the other side of this BEAST of a week!

* Everyone is sharing this video because it is so.damn.awesome. If you haven't already watched WestJet absolutely rock the Christmas spirit, watch it now (and grab a tissue!)
* This is the best map of the NYC subway system I've ever seen. Thank you Super Bowl!
* What a pretty version of this song (sorry about the annoying pre-roll!)
* Any ladies out there have THIS hair gadget? Tell me straight, do I need it? (I might need it)
* A super interesting article about ACL injuries if you're a knee geek like me.
* Miles Redd is my fav. Somebody tell Dr. H to buy me THIS.
* I wish it would rain tacos too (and other hil-ARIOUS kiddie notes).
* First of all, that sketch is divine. Second, this list is so true.
* Remember when it was autumn and colorful and beautiful?
* and because THESE naughty dog notes never get old (thanks sis!)

ps - in case you were wondering, I was right. Bespectacled, sequin owl was found under the stuffed elephant at the bottom of my hamper. HOORAY!!

The most important thing to prep for the holidays...

Well hello there!
With the holidays fast approaching, everyone is buzzing about appetizers, desserts, gifts and hosting, so I thought I would take a few steps back from the chaos and talk about something really important: your hair. Specifically, how you my friend, can be the envy of all at the table with a simple, sassy hairdo. Now before you go "but I can't!" I'm here to say "oh yes you can!" Many updos are far easier than you would expect and just require a bit of patience, good product and maybe a test run the day before, to achieve perfection.

This style from The Beauty Department is great "for shorties" like myself. Can't really use a curling iron? No problem, sleep with your hair slightly damp and in a bun the night before for gentle, natural body. Can't do fancy french braids? (Me neither!) Try these knots (like tying your shoe) for a way simpler way to achieve the same texture. Full post HERE. Pinterest HERE.

Another simple to execute but totally adorable style from The Beauty Department. This look is great for girlies with bangs, side bangs or just one who rocks a bun. The final result is charming and fresh with very little fuss. Full post HERE. Pinterest HERE.

Well, it doesn't get much easier than this! The "Tuck and Cover" from My Soul is the Sky requires only shoulder-ish length hair and 2 elastic hairbands to give you this classic-meets-bohemian look. Full post HERE. Pinterest HERE.

Bed head has never looked so good! This sexy braided look from A Little Bit Of... is casual "hippie-chic" and in my opinion perfect for a hearty Thanksgiving meal followed by backyard football and couch lounging. Absolutely one of those styles that tricks people into thinking you have crazy hair stylin skills! Full post HERE. Pinterest HERE

Merry Meri Hair Tricks of the Trade:
* Try a style out for the first time when your hair is wet. Even though this may not deliver a lot of body, wet hair has great hold for styling and it lets you practice the moves required to get the style right.
* Never use clean hair!! Wash the night (or ideally day) before for optimal oily/non-silky hair. If you have bangs or front angle pieces and are worried about looking greasy, pull those out and wash/blowdry just that front section before starting to style. If your hair is unavoidably freshly washed and dried, try spraying with a light hold spray first to make it less soft.
* Accessorize to hide imperfection!! (A personal favorite.) This past weekend I successfully copied a style I had done by a pro by using black hair flowers (approx $3 at Forever 21) to hide my whispy-stick-outs and sloppy bobby pin job. H&M and Forever 21 have an awesome inexpensive collection of pins, clips, scarves and flowers to add some sass to your style (while secretly hiding its flaws!)
* Have the right tools on hand. Tiny clear elastics, lots of bobby pins, light hold spray and heavy hold spray (for 1 final spritz at the end if it's a tighter style).
* Don't wait until the day-of to try a new style for the first time, especially if you aren't used to styling your own hair. Take some time on a quiet Saturday or Sunday morning to sit in front of the mirror and play around. Improvise based on your own hair's length and texture and don't be afraid to pull it all out and start over (I usually do at least twice!)
* Click HERE, HERE and HERE for a few other styles that I turn to on a regular basis for hair wow'ing!

PS- In case you were wondering how the plans from THIS post were coming, I was on an un-avoiding ROLL last night! Closet, sheets, laundry, dinner... I even scrubbed the stove top. Game on Fall Funk.

Back on track!

Sounds about right...
Do you ever find yourself in a mental place where you can just feel that change is on the horizon? There's been something of a slow build for Dr. H and I lately, tons of moving parts, aspirations, travel and juggling and I just have this sense that the winds of change are set to start blowin... I wonder? Oh fall, you are so transitional and contemplative!!!

Anywaysss, since I've been a bit distant from you all lately, I thought I'd take today to catch you up on some very important things:
1) I made a haircut appointment for the end of this month and I'm planning to go for something kinda like THIS cut in THESE colors (no pink this time!). Or do I get brave and chop straight to THIS!?
2) I have been the worstest healthy habit keeper on the planet. I don't think I've made my own lunch in like 2 weeks and I'm not doing much better when it comes to dinner. Time to get back to the basics am I right? Looking forward to cooking THIS and THIS soon.
3) From Pinterest, to the website, coming soon to my closet (all on my phone!) I'm envisioning it with army green skinny jeans and ankle booties.
4) Just how "off" are things? There's been no toilet paper or paper towels in my apartment for the past 24 hours. Let's just say it was a tissue-ful morning for me and the Mister.
5) I think you need to stop everything you're doing and make THESE right now.
6) Today is Friday the 13th!!! Be careful out there my friends!!!

Hump Day Distractions

Yeeeaahhh buddy!
Is it strange that I find today's forecast of 90 degrees and sunny to be absolutely THRILLING!? Summer weather appears to be back in full force so this cubicle-bound girl has just crossed all her fingers and toes that the heat lasts until the weekend. Also, am I super lame for talking about the weather so often? Who cares, I lurve me some summer sun! Here to get us all over the hump are some delight distractions from around the web. Happy clicking!!

* John Steinbeck's 1958 letter on love transcends time.

Be brave. Think pink.

Fact.
Yesterday I dyed my hair pink. Well not my whole hair, but a small section of tips located in the back, under a layer and only visible from the front if I pull my hair forward. It's no doubt a wuss's version of brightly colored hair, as subtle as putting pink in your hair can be, but you cannot deny... it's pink.

Ever since I was caught coloring my hair with washable markers in the elementary school bathroom (true story), I've dreamed of having the courage to dye my hair a bold color. Colored hair is on my bucket list I suppose. So yesterday I finally just said "why the hell not!?" and went for it. I felt nervous the entire time, knowing I would love it, but worried beyond belief about what others would think. "Am I too old? Is this unprofessional? Will it seem silly?" The list of doubts went on and on even as my stylist blew out my hair to reveal a bit of pinkalicious fabulousity that made my insides sing. Isn't it funny how much you can intimidate yourself worrying about the thoughts of others?

My bold stand against conventional hair color will fade within the next few weeks, but just like the last time I took my hair out to play, I couldn't be happier that I finally stopped stressing about "supposed to" and allowed myself a tiny slice of "just because I want to".

* Tiny tattoos that will make you think "mmmaaaybe I could pull that off" (does #16 look familiar!?)
* That's a lot of food Ron.
* I miss my inflatable furniture (said no one, ever).
* And lastly, THESE teachers are my heroes.

Hair, there and everywhere

Rain rain go away.
Today is (another) one of those days when having hair, like, at all, is a pain in the patooty. I have literally gone through 3 different styles (bun was too flat, pony was too poufy, messy and down is just right?!) desperate to make something presentable out of the pouring rain, humid, misty mess on my head. Though I generally love my hair (It never puts on weight! It can always be changed!) my naturally curly(ish) coif ends up frizzy and lifeless when the weather does not cooperate. Since I know I'm not alone in my quest to keep my mane looking good, I thought I would share some favorite products and styles with my merry friends.
Bumble and bumble - Surf Spray
Beach in a bottle
This product is the best addition to my hair regime that I've had in a long time. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray is applied to your hair right out of the shower (you don't even need to brush it, just towel dry) and the instructions are literally like "apply, crunch around, stand in wind". I'm amazed at the genuinely beachy look this product gives my hair and it is perfect to use when you're in a rush, or on a day like today when wet weather renders styling useless.
Pros: Gives hair great body, creates a convincingly post-day-at-the-beach style perfect for summer (also rainy days) and requires less than 5 minutes styling time
Cons: The spray is salt-water based, so your hair does feel a bit dry after use. I wouldn't recommend daily application

Tons of products to choose from
Growing up, I used Biosilk to tame fly-aways and give my hair extra shine, but I've recently become a Moroccan Oil convert. Moroccan Oil smells amazing, and the tiniest amount (literally, less than dime sized for my mid-back length hair) reduces frizz and creates gorgeous shine. I apply the basic oil treatment after straightening for a glossy finish or after making barrel or kinky-curls to reduced the fuzz/flyaway halo that humidity or wind can create.
Pros: Gives hair gorgeous shine, an amazing smell (that lasts ALL day) and reduces frizz without creating oily hair (also, lasts FOREVER because you need so little per use)
Cons: VERY easy to overdo it. The little glass bottles don't have a dispenser meaning the oil sometimes flows out in amounts far larger than what's needed. DO NOT use too much or you'll look greasy

Knot Hairstyle (with photo instructions!)
Style-a-knot
Having a few go-to updo's for your hair is an awesome way to avoid ponytail fatigue. I've found that the key to these "everyday" styles is that they must be genuinely easy to execute otherwise you'll get frustrated/run late for work/never even attempt them. I LOVE the "knots" style featured above as well as the messy buns looks pictured below (just divide your hair into 2-3 sections and secure 2-3 messy buns with bobby pins in the back). Tricks to remember - when styling your hair, brushes are the enemy. If your hair is too smooth or clean, it won't hold a style as well (making easy updos a great option for non-wash days). I also sometimes cheat and use damp hair because it's so NOT smooth that it's easier to secure. Check out a few other fun/easy styles HERE, HERE and HERE
Pros: Unique (compliments abound on updo days), easy and fast
Cons: Practice makes perfect. Definitely take a new updo for a test drive BEFORE the morning you want to pull it off.

You accessorize your neck, ears, fingers and wrists, why not your hair!? I'm amazed at how a boring high bun or ponytail takes on new life by simply applying a colorful flower, hairband, scarf or pretty clip. Small accessories can add so much to your outfit and low-price point options abound at places like H&M and Forever 21. Next time you're desperate to get your hair from blah to beautiful, clip in a little something fun!

Hump Day Distractions

Rubber Ducky, you're the (big) one!
This morning the skies opened up in NYC and dumped enough rain on me to soak nearly every ounce of clothing I was wearing (despite my raincoat and umbrella!) ...and did I mention it was before 8am and I was going to WORK OUT!?! Universe, you're a real b*tch sometimes, ya know that!!? Anyway, here to help us hump the hell outta this day are a ton of delightful distractions. Enjoy!

* What an awesome way to preserve your kid's artwork without having to save every single piece (though I strongly recommend keeping more than a few originals anyway:)
* More information than you ever needed (but kind of wanted) to know about the Doritos Locos Taco.
* Anyone have a spare $695 to buy me these quirky beauties? (via Honestly WTF)
* And while we're on the topic of expensive beyond belief... Looks like a sort of unintentional sequel to "The September Issue" (which I adored).
* Spice up your dinner party table decor for just $9.99 (via Justina Blakeney)
* Warren Buffet wants us to remember the ladies..!
* Pasta salad deliciousness.
* Whole lotta awesome hair tutorials.
* Amazing people in amazing combinations.
* Craft those cheapy votive candle holders into a little something special.
* THIS dog just blew my mind.
* A Dad with an excellent sense of humor (I hope his wife has one too!)
* I think her joke is hysterical and his animation is perfection.

Well...

Eats candy for breakfast like a boss.
... it was bound to happen. This morning, after more than a week resisting the urge, I had a Cadbury Egg for breakfast. It rocked my world. Sometimes you just have to go for the Egg and never look back... am I right?!

Anyway, this week is gonna be a weird one because there are Passover Seders to squeeze in with shortened workdays and Dr. H and I are blowin this (endless wintery) joint to jet down to Florida for some sunshine come Thursday morning. Basically, no promises on original merry musings this week, but thoughtfully curated good stuff from around the web? That I can deliver. So enjoy the last of your bread and pasta Jews, keep stocking up on Cadbury goodness Easter-lovers and Happy Monday to you all.

Spaghetti with Tomatoes, Black Olives, Garlic, and Feta Cheese
Yum

Just a little something to have at the top of my "to do" list when Passover ends. Spaghetti with Tomatoes, Black Olives, Garlic, and Feta Cheese... YUM. Full recipe HERE, via Pinterest HERE.

This is what best friends look like at 85 years young. Get ready to smile :)

easy peasy I promise
Looking for a new, simple 'do for spring/summer!? I followed this seriously simple tutorial (they aren't even braids, they're knots, like the first step of tying your shoe!!!) and the compliments came pouring in. I did it with wet hair right out of the shower (which I often find is the easiest way to try a new style because your hair is less silky/slippery/loose) and can't wait to make this my go-to look at the end of a sunny day at the beach!!

Being realistic is overrated.

MUST. OWN. THIS. VASE.

And last but certainly not least, I think these adorable prints from Cosas Minimas would make fabulous decor for a kid's bedroom or playroom (don't get any crazy ideas, I'm just thinking out loud here:)
