Celebrity gossip, my vice.

Yoinks.
... you guys. I can't stop wondering about what exactly went down between Jay-Z and Solange Knowles in that Standard Hotel elevator. Like honestly, what went down in that elevator?! Is the video even legit?! I've spent all my spare "post something on the blog" time this morning scouring the internet for news and conspiracies, like a dirty paparazzi, digging into a story that should be none of my business

But despite being fully aware that this is some "scum of the earth" level celebrity gossip nosiness, I can't control myself. I love all things Carter-Knowles and this scuffle is so outside the perfectly manicured image they project of themselves, I'm desperate to know what happened. Was Solange, whose music I happen to love, justified in her outburst? Whose side is Beyonce on!? This post is like a shameful confession: I, Merry Meri, am a celebrity gossip addict. Now someone please tell me what happened in that elevator!

Hump Day Distractions

All smiles on Hump Day!
Hellllllo Wednesday!! How are we holding up this week? I'm draggin a bit, but clinging to the glorious, sunny weekend the weatherman is promising is just a few days away (funny how we selectively choose to trust the forecast huh!?). Here to help pass the time are some distractions from around the web. Enjoy!

* This is, indeed, the saddest party foul ever (someone get me a straw!)
* Do you live in the W. Village area of NYC? If so, you should know about THIS.
* Before they were stars... thank goodness George Clooney changed his hairstylist.
* These burgundy beauties are heading right onto my Channuka list.
* Hey ladies! Stop apologizing, always saying yes, body-snarking, holding onto regret and other rotten girlish habits we all should banish!
* Well it's about damn time THIS happened.
* A thought provoking piece on rocking the body you've got.
* Louis CK brilliantly discusses the toxic addiction young people have to smartphones.
* #justintimberlake #jimmyfallon #brilliant #hashtagobsessed
* If you want it, you might as well ask for it creatively :)
* Now THAT is an apology!!

Celebri-quette.

Celeb Sighting.
On my recent flight to Atlanta, I had an encounter with greatness. Actually, it was with one-fifth of greatness, but greatness nevertheless. Sitting there in first class (as I wiggled my way past to coach) was Brian Littrell. I froze... I was in the presence of a Backstreet Boy. Heart racing, I made it to my seat and I made a decision. I tore out a blank page from the back of the book I was reading, found a pen and declared "I am going to get his autograph for J" (J being my bestest girl and someone who spent many years of her life certain that she would one day be Mrs. Brian Littrell). Dr. H was legitimately horrified. "That is wrong. So inappropriate. You CANNOT do that."

Perturbed by his response, I mulled it over. You see, New Yorkers pride themselves on a certain level of celebrity etiquette. The "knowing smile" is completely acceptable, even a quick "I'm a big fan of your work" is permitted, but making a scene, interrupting, requesting photos... that's something we leave to the amateurs (LA:). In NYC, we're not supposed to be too impressed, or maybe we're just keen to let celebs live their glamorous lives beside us because that makes everyone feel cool. I don't know where our "rules" come from, but what I did know was that I'd NEVER approached a celebrity requesting an autograph before and this was a faux pas I was willing to make. I wanted it that way and Dr. H was going to have to quit playing games with my heart.

So twice during the flight I made my way to the first class bathroom (curtain be damned!) with my book and pen in hand, but both times all I could do was gaze at Brian's angelic sleeping face. When we de-planed I hustled to baggage claim, willing Bri Guy (of course) to be waiting for some oversized bag, but alas he flew carry-on only (sorry J!) Now, much to Dr. H's approval, I'm back to my NYC etiquette, admiring stars only from afar... unless of course I encounter another member of BSB (ohmygod they're back agaaaaain), then all bets are off.

Hump Day Distractions

The Mystery Section.
Welcome to Hump Day, the one day of the week when just getting through it is considered a major victory. Is Friday in your sites yet!? I've got an awesome weekend in the queue so every spare second is being spent daydreaming about my niece and nephew, a mexican dinner, little orphan Annie (on Broadway!) and a big girls tea party (awesome right!?) Here to help bring our daydreams just a little closer to reality are some distraction from around the web. Happy Wednesday!!!

* Beautiful and terrifying at the same time... if you love the ocean, THESE are for you
* Soooo, when can I move in?
* Slim-Fast wants dieters to look good doing the reverse cowgirl. Honesty is awesome.
* Lookin sharp NYC.
* I want to visit THIS bridge real bad (<-- something I never thought I'd say!)
* Dishing some ((un) warranted) celebrity hater-aide.
* No sh*t (better get some more water cups!)
* Fabulously adorable birthday dinner decor
* I would eat that "Walk Off" and that "Stratsburger" too.
* This is what diversity in fashion looks like.
* Just when you thought you knew the lowest depths of a Bridezilla...
* Dancing babies in fashionable adult-wear aka, adorable.
* Beauties in bloom.
* Sometimes you've just gotta dance. Hardcore.

Hump Day Distractions

What a grand reception!
Could this Wednesday be any more ick!? As if being only half way to Friday wasn't bad enough, here in NYC we're getting slammed with "it's too warm to snow, but too cold to be even remotely pleasant" precipitation. Where are sweatpants and Netflix when ya need em!? Here to get you over the hump is a hearty serving of awesome distractions... enjoy!

* What if your favorite celeb looked "just like us"?!
* In his defense, that pot could be a sexy turtle friend! (Brings new meaning to "Hump Day)
* I submitted to Strangers Project the other night when I stumbled upon its creator in Washington Square Park. Would you share your story?
* Pack your bags, we've go places to go!
* This is one of the greatest pranks EVER. Holy cow.
* I've discussed the impact of technology on love before. Do you think that courtship is dead?
* Now that I have a chalkboard wall in my living room, I need to beef up my drawing skills!
* Bubbles, a baby and her four legged friend. Smiles galore.

Hump Day Distractions

Some Wednesdays require wit & sass. This is one of those Wednesdays.
Well hello hello. I'm back from the deserts of California with distractions galore!! How was my weekend at Coachella you ask!? Well...
* I ate one of THESE (and yes I am already tracking their NYC truck for seconds).
* I saw a rapper rise from the dead and he confirmed that life aint nothin but a gangsta party (track at 2:48; beware of some serious thug life language in that link).
* I danced like crazy, but lacked sufficient glow-in-the-dark accessories. Next time I will be more prepared
* Radiohead. YES.
* These pictures do it much more justice than mine ever will (I'm not cool, I don't Instagram).

OR... maybe you're all "I don't care about your stinkin vacation at the stinkin music festival!"
No worries, I got you covered:
* Baby giraffe and a butterfly. Click it NOW.
* I think I need to check out this store.
* Looksy what I cooked for dinner last night!
* Ever wonder how many shades of grey Barbara Walters likes her men?
* I want to be friends with ALL these people.

California dreamin...

Peace out homies.
By the time you read this, I will be at 30,000 feet, en route to the Pacific Ocean between my toes and amazing music in my ears. Thanks to awesome friends (who think up awesome wedding gifts) I am headed to the Coachella Music Festival. I get 24 hours in Santa Monica and then 72 hours in the desert rubbing elbows with celebrities while listening to some of my favorite musicians (more on them tomorrow!) It has all the makings of an absolutely perfect weekend getaway.

Even if you aren't on vacation these next few days, that doesn't mean you can't find something awesomely out of the ordinary to do! Here are a few mighty fine suggestions to get your imagination going:
* Get Sporty. Baseball season is underway and you know you've missed your team. Grab some cheap seats and go eat a hot dog OR if you're feeling more like a homebody, the NHL Playoffs kicked off last night and there are ridiculous matchups going on all weekend long (and go "drink from the Cup" in Times Square through Friday!)
* Sing and Dance. Coachella isn't the only show in town... there's live music happening everywhere, all the time, if you know where to look. Sonicliving and Tourfilter are two great sites for finding out about upcoming shows in your area.
* Get Creative. If you're in the NYC area, I highly recommend checking out the BUST Magazine Craftacular and Food Fair. That's right, crafts AND foods... be still my heart.
* Play Outside. Spring is my favorite season for picnics because the temperature is really perfect - no sweaty cheese or warm wine. Pack up some goodies (Dr. H and I LOVE our picnic backpack) and venture into the great outdoors.

RIP Famous Person I feel like I knew.

It’s interesting how we mourn the death of a celebrity. As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, Whitney Houston passed away over the weekend and since the news broke, I’ve heard her music in bars, seen her videos on tv and there are too many posts on Twitter and Facebook about her to count. We all seem to feel a loss, an emotional connection to this stranger whose celebrity persona and accomplishments touched our lives, however distantly.

And this is not a new phenomena; from John Lennon and Marilyn Monroe, to Chris Farley, Aliyah, Heath Ledger or Michael Jackson... when a celebrity dies, particularly a sudden death, we gravitate to the “story” and feel loss even though the gross majority of us never met or knew these individuals personally. Is it that we are fascinated by their downfall as much as their success? Is it that their pop culture contributions are so a part of our own memories that we feel the loss on a personal level? Whatever the reason, it’s amazing that these famous strangers have made their way into our hearts. Rest in peace celebrity "friends" and thank you for your contributions to our lives.
